Super Dogs: LA Tech’s History in the Super Bowl

It’s February, and that can only mean one thing: Super Bowl Sunday is upon us! As we get ready to watch Bulldog great Milton Williams play in Super Bowl LX this Sunday, I got curious – how many former Louisiana Tech football players have reached the pinnacle of football?

Tech’s own Record Book lists out each of the 24 Super Bowl rings former Bulldogs have won – a truly impressive number! But I wanted to know more… Who are these players? When did they play? How many Super Bowls have featured a Tech player?

Super Bowl Highlights

Super Bowl II

The Packers defeated J.R. Williamson’s Oakland Raiders fairly easily, but not without our former Bulldog recovering a fumble along the way. Williamson wasn’t the only tie to Lincoln Parish - Grambling State’s band performed the National Anthem and Halftime Show at the game.

Super Bowl V

Often referred to as the “Blunder Bowl” or “Stupor Bowl” because of the sloppy play, former Bulldog Punter David Lee punted four times for 41.5 average yards. If four punts doesn’t sound like a lot (especially with a final score of 16-13), it’s because Baltimore gave up SEVEN turnovers… and WON.

Super Bowl X

It wouldn't be a Tech Super Bowl retrospective without some TB12 (the OG TB12) Highlights. How about this 64-yard BOMB to Lynn Swann that won the Steelers their second straight Super Bowl? NFL Films ranked it the Greatest Throw of All Time!

Super Bowl XIV

Yes, Terry Bradshaw won the MVP (his second in a row), but let's talk about Larry Anderson. The former Bulldog - a walk-on who didn't sniff the field until his senior season, when he became a College Division All American for his kick and punt returning prowess - set a Super Bowl record with 5 kick returns for 162 yards en route to the Steelers' second straight Championship.

Super Bowl XIV

After being traded to San Francisco at the trade deadline, Fred Dean was a PROBLEM for the NFC. He recorded 12 sacks (including one in the Super Bowl), and has been hailed as one of the most significant trade acquisitions in NFL history due to his impact on the Lombardi Trophy's home that season.

Super Bowl XXXI

Former Bulldog Linebacker Doug Evans - drafted 141st overall by the Packers in 1993 and immediately converted into a CB - picked off Drew Bledsoe in the first quarter. The Packers, led by a no-good Mustard Buzzard who shall not be named, went on to win 35-21. Here's a cool story from Packers.com about Evans and Tramon Williams' relationship!

Super Bowl XLIV

Although the Indianapolis Colts lost to the New Orleans Saints, former Bulldog Kicker Matt Stover became the oldest player to ever score in a Super Bowl (42 Years, 11 Days). This record was later broken by TB12 (the other, less Tech-related one).

Super Bowl XLIX

Former Double Ray Guy Award-winner Ryan Allen played in his first of four Super Bowls with the New England Patriots. During this game, he set the Super Bowl record with a field-flipping 64 yard punt that helped the Patriots defeat the Seahawks.

Super Bowl LVII

Super Bowl 57 was the first to feature three different former Bulldogs, and the first to make former teammates into adversaries. Milton Williams (DT) and Boston Scott (RB) both played rotational roles with the Philadelphia Eagles, while L'Jarius Sneed started at CB.

One of the highlights of the game isn't reflected in the box score, as Sneed separated Eagles RB Miles Sanders from the ball in what was originally ruled a catch and fumble (which the Chiefs returned for a TD). After review, the referee announced that the ruling was overturned to an incomplete pass... but Sneed's stellar hit served as a turning point for the Chiefs defense - which came out on top.

Super Bowl LIX

In Milton Williams' second try for a Super Bowl ring with the Eagles, he was READY. The former Tech DT ended the game with 2 sacks, 4 tackles, and a huge strip sack of Patrick Mahomes to put the final nail in the Chiefs' coffin:
